Dr. Doug Smeaton
President and Chief Executive Officer, 1992 - 2007

He was a man of great integrity and had the respect and admiration of all who worked with him.

On Sunday February 18th, 2007, Dr. Doug Smeaton, President and CEO of Semiconductor Insights passed away doing one of the things he loved most, scuba diving. Doug was a passionate man and never did anything ‘half way’. The three most important things in his life were his family, his company, and his diving. Doug was a diving enthusiast, enjoying the sport at least once a week. He trained and was a highly experienced deep-water diver, traveling around the globe to dive in such diverse locales as Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, the Red Sea, the Sea of Japan, and even Lake Superior. Doug joined SI in 1992 and led a management buyout of the Company from its US owners in 1994. From 1992 to 2007, he was SI’s President and CEO, as well as being the company’s heart and soul. As President, Doug grew SI from fewer than 18 to over 155 people, along the way transforming it into the pre-eminent source of technical intelligence to the semiconductor, electronic, and legal industries.

Several of Doug's friends from the scuba diving world put together this video tribute to Doug. View a larger version.

Doug was an extremely generous man, always giving his time and energy to employees and to the larger high tech community. In addition to his SI responsibilities, Doug was a current or past member of the Board of Directors of numerous technology companies, including Skystone (acquired by Cisco), Philsar (acquired by Conexant), Sybarus (acquired by Lucent), SiGem (now Mobile Knowledge), SiGe Semiconductor, Triant Technologies (listed as TNT on the TSX), MuAnalysis and Symagery Microsystems (acquired by Psion Teklogix), which he also founded in 1997. Doug was a founding Director of the Strategic Microelectronics Corporation (now part of ITAC) and served on the Board of the Canadian Advanced Technology Association (CATA). Prior to SI, Doug served as Senior VP and General Manager of Mitel Semiconductor (now Zarlink Semiconductor), and President and CEO of Anatek Electronics.

Doug was a friend and a mentor. He was a strong leader who went out of his way to treat everyone in a fair and equitable manner. Doug was a man of high integrity and ethics.

Doug leaves behind Marg, his wife of 38 years, his sons Paul, Matt (currently an employee of SI), and Kurt, and many other friends, colleagues, and family. The family has requested donations be made to the Ottawa Mission in memory of Dr. Doug Smeaton, in lieu of flowers. The Mission is a local Ottawa charity that assists homeless people where Marg works as Manager of Health Services.

Hundreds of people affirmed what a unique person he was in our condolence book.
