Semiconductor Insights Honors Micron
with the 2004 INSIGHT Award for Most Innovative DRAM
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
OTTAWA and BOISE, IDAHO, May 25, 2004 Semiconductor Insights (SI), the leader in technical and patent analyses of integrated circuits and structures, announced it awarded Micron Technology, Inc., the 2004 INSIGHT Award for Most Innovative DRAM for Micron’s 6F² cell architecture.
"Significant innovation occurred in DRAM this year. We analyzed several devices across all major vendors, including leading-edge DDR and DDR2 parts," said Lluis Paris, Director of TECHinsights for Semiconductor Insights," and we concluded Micron’s 6F² achieved the most innovation in DRAM technology not just this year, but over the past several years. The latest ITRS road map, just published in December, forecast 6F² would not be realized until 2008 and yet here we are."
Steadily increasing DRAM densities require more than evolutionary scaling and lithography techniques to support sustained annual growth of 50 percent on shipped bits. More space-efficient memory cells demand new dielectrics and associated electrode materials, and Micron’s 6F² array architecture accomplishes this feat.
"We analyzed production grade 256Mb DRAM with a 6F² cell size from Micron in both 130nm and 110nm process," added Paris. "This revolutionary breakthrough puts Micron ahead of its competition in the DRAM density game."
"Semiconductor Insights annually honors companies for technology developments that set the standard in their competitive field, and Micron is privileged to be among them," said Mark Durcan, Micron’s Chief Technical Officer and Vice President of Research and Development. "As the only DRAM supplier to successfully implement a 6F² array architecture in manufacturing, we are extremely pleased by the recognition associated with this industry award. The 6F² architecture enables Micron to significantly reduce memory cell size. By converting from the commonly used 8F2 to 6F², we increase potential die-per-wafer by approximately 20 percent at any given process technology node reducing our manufacturing cost-per-bit. The receipt of this award coupled with Micron’s achievement to be the first supplier to validate all three densities of DDR2 at 533 MHz and the first to provide customers with the highest-density DDR2 DRAM components, including a 1Gb DDR2 device speaks well of our innovation in both process and product technology."
