Texas Instruments OMAP2420 Applications Processor Recognized as Most Innovative System On Chip

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

OTTAWA, November 3, 2005 - Semiconductor Insights (SI), the leader in technical and patent analyses of integrated circuits and electronic systems, today announced that it has awarded Texas Instruments' OMAP2420 the 2005 INSIGHT Award for Most Innovative System On Chip (SoC).

"TI has implemented a novel architecture compared to the previous OMAP platforms," said Edward Keyes, Vice President and CTO for SI. "The new architecture splits tasks across four independent and separately optimized processing engines."

"TI is pleased that its OMAP2420 processor has been recognized by Semiconductor Insights for the Most Innovative system on chip award," said Richard Kerslake, TI's worldwide general manager of its OMAP Platform, Wireless Terminals Business Unit. "We've worked closely with our customers to determine which features would be most important on the next generation of 3G mobile phones and have created the OMAP 2 architecture to deliver the ultimate multimedia experience for users."

Recent SI analysis of TI's OMAP2420 has shown reduced power consumption over previous generations. Using TI's 90nm process technology, the OMAP2420 has a slightly increased die size over the OMAP1710, but utilizes innovative power management techniques that result in zero leakage levels in inactive blocks. "Each processing engine can be individually turned off when not in use," said Keyes. "This conserves power for functions that are not being used and extends the battery life."
