Semiconductor Insights Identifies WiFi Design Wins in Nintendo Wii

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Ottawa, CANADA - November 27, 2006 - Semiconductor Insights (SI), the world’s leading technical advisor to the global microelectronics industry, analyzes 1500+ devices a year. Many of these devices come from the latest and greatest products, such as cell phones and game consoles. SI’s teardown of the Nintendo Wii was performed the same day that the system came on the worldwide market.

One point of note about the Wii is that Nintendo’s intent is to have the system connected to the Internet at all times, even when the console is turned off, to enable constant update downloading. "It's interesting that Nintendo has chosen WiFi over Ethernet as the native Internet connectivity mode for the Wii," said Edward Keyes, SI’s CTO. "There are two components, contained on a separate board inside the console, that enable this functionality. One is the Broadcom BCM4318 wireless LAN 802.11b/g transceiver and the other is the SiGe SE2521A60 power amplifier RF module for 802.11b/g standards. Interestingly, this is the same setup that has been incorporated in the ASUS WL500G Wireless LAN router. This is a big win for SiGe and shows Ottawa has world-class RF design expertise."

The Broadcom device, the AirForce One solution, is a low power, single-chip transceiver. The solution has a power management scheme, consuming less power than other wireless LAN solutions. The SiGe device reduces the number of components required by integrating all of the functionality from the transceiver to the antenna. The design enables a smaller total system form factor and reduces the overall system cost by eliminating between 25 to 30 components.

SI will be at the Engineer-IT Career Fair, Scotia Bank Place, Ottawa, November 28, 2006, 10am to 6pm.
