AMD 65nm Processor Recognized as Most Innovative Process Technology

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

San Jose, California, December 5, 2006 - Semiconductor Insights (SI), the world's leading technical advisor to the global microelectronics industry, today announced that it has awarded the 65nm energy efficient AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 dual-core desktop processors the 2006 INSIGHT Award for Most Innovative Process Technology. "Our analysis of the device has confirmed that the 65nm AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 dual-core desktop processors produced at AMD's Fab 36, use minimum gate lengths of 35nm, nine copper and one aluminum metal levels, strained silicon channel and a Silicon-On-Insulator (SOI) substrate," stated Don Scansen, SI's lead process analyst. "Put altogether, it is an impressive technology package"

"We are very pleased with Semiconductor Insights' recognition of our innovative 65nm process technology implementation," said Nick Kepler, vice president of logic technology at AMD (NYSE: AMD). "Through improved transistor performance and power efficiency, our 65nm products are designed to deliver compelling value to our customers with leading-edge performance-per-watt across AMD platforms."

SI has analyzed logic devices as they have advanced through process lithography ranging from 2.5µm down to 65nm. SOI technology places a thin silicon layer over a buried oxide layer on top the silicon substrate to reduce the charge transistors require for switching, increasing speed and reducing power consumption. "SOI technology enables an ideal solution for high performance applications," said Scansen.
