Marvell 88W8686 Recognized as Most Innovative RF IC
OTTAWA, June 5, 2007 - Semiconductor Insights (SI), the leader in technical and patent analyses of integrated circuits and electronic systems, today announced that it has awarded Marvell's 88W8686 ultra-low-power 90nm Wireless LAN (WLAN) single chip solution the 2007 INSIGHT Award for Most Innovative RF IC. The Marvell 88W8686 was found in a Wi2Wi 802.11b/g and Bluetooth system in package (SiP), and is one of five different die in the package. The 88W8686 offers a single chip solution for the 802.11a/b/g wireless standards, enabling easy design integration. "The Marvell 88W8686 is the first 90nm 802.11a/b/g WLAN system-on-chip solution that Semiconductor Insights has analyzed," stated Michael Keller, SI's Technology Manager for Wireless. "One of the key criterion in judging the nominees for the Most Innovative RF IC category was the level of integration achieved, and the Marvell device has excelled in this regard. Being an SoC, the 88W8686 integrates a dual-band RF transceiver operating at 2.4 and 5 GHz, a physical layer, a media access controller, and an ARM processor into a single die." "Besides the high level of integration, another area where the 88W8686 device excels is process technology", said Keller. The die was fabricated in a seven metal, single poly 90nm CMOS process technology with a die size of 18.4mm² as measured by SI. In fabricating the RF and analog circuits alongside the digital ones, Marvell has used some innovative techniques in laying out the RF components, as their previous design could not scale with the process node.
